Optimizing Underfloor Heating with Tado Thermostat

After experiencing inefficiencies with my underfloor heating system, I decided to explore ways to optimize its performance using my Tado V3 thermostat. Here’s what I discovered and how I improved the system:

The Issue:
During colder nights, the indoor temperature would drop below my set point of 22.5°C despite the heating being active. The system would start heating at the lowest level (one bar) and gradually increase to three bars, but this process was inefficient and resulted in unnecessary energy consumption.

The Solution:
I realized that the system was not responding quickly enough to temperature drops. To address this, I reached out to Tado support and explored the thermostat’s advanced settings. While Tado doesn’t currently offer a direct option to start heating at full power when the temperature drops below a certain threshold, I found a workaround by adjusting the maximum flow temperature and scheduling settings.

What I Did:

  1. Increased Maximum Flow Temperature: I raised the maximum flow temperature to 50°C to ensure faster heating when needed.
  2. Adjusted Scheduling: I programmed the thermostat to preemptively increase heating during colder hours to maintain a more stable indoor temperature.
  3. Monitoring and Fine-Tuning: I closely monitored the system’s performance and made adjustments to the settings based on real-time data.

The Results:
These changes have significantly improved the system’s efficiency. The heating now responds more effectively to temperature drops, reducing the time the boiler runs at lower levels and saving gas. While I still hope Tado adds an option to start heating at full power during significant temperature drops, these adjustments have made a noticeable difference.

Conclusion:
Optimizing my underfloor heating system with the Tado thermostat has been a rewarding experience. It highlights the importance of understanding and leveraging the features of smart home devices. I’m excited to see how future updates to the Tado app might further enhance this system.

If anyone has additional tips or experiences with underfloor heating optimization, I’d love to hear them!
