Outdoor Lighting Automation with Motion Detection

Hello everyone! I’m currently working on enhancing my outdoor lighting system using Hubitat, and I wanted to share my progress and seek some advice. My goal is to create an automation that adjusts the brightness of my driveway lights based on motion detection, while maintaining energy efficiency and minimizing light pollution.I’ve successfully set up some basic automations using my Lutron dimmers, which gradually increase and decrease the brightness of the lights based on sunset and sunrise times. This setup works well for providing ambient lighting throughout the night without causing excessive light pollution in my heavily wooded area. However, I’ve noticed that when people are outside or when I’m entertaining guests, the lights are often too dim to clearly illuminate the driveway and surrounding areas. To address this, I want to integrate my Hue outdoor motion sensors into the automation. Here’s what I’m aiming to achieve:1. Motion Detection Trigger: When one of the two Hue outdoor motion detectors detects motion, and the driveway lights are already on, I want the lights to immediately increase to 100% brightness. This will provide better visibility when someone is outside.2. Automatic Dimming After Inactivity: If no motion is detected for 5 minutes, I want the lights to return to their previous dimmed state, which is part of my existing automation based on sunset and sunrise times. This ensures energy efficiency and reduces light pollution when no one is outside.I’ve tried setting this up on my own, but I’m hitting some snags. For example, the lights sometimes don’t return to their original state after the motion stops, or the automation doesn’t trigger consistently. I’m wondering if there’s a more reliable way to structure this automation, perhaps by using a virtual switch or a scene to manage the state transitions.I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully implemented a similar setup or has tips for making this automation more robust. Your insights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
