Philips Hue Automation Success Story: Motion-Activated Path Lights

After a bit of trial and error, I finally got my Philips Hue Calla path lights automation working perfectly! For those who might be interested in setting up something similar, here’s how I did it.

The Goal:
I wanted my outdoor path lights to switch to a seasonal color scene from sunset until 11 PM. That part was straightforward using the Hue app. The challenge was integrating the new Hue outdoor motion sensors I recently purchased.

The Automation Setup:
When motion is detected, I wanted the lights to switch to a bright white scene for 3 minutes after the motion stops. After that, they should revert to whatever scene was previously active or turn off if it’s after 11 PM. This required a bit of creativity since the Hue app didn’t have a direct option for this.

The Solution:
I discovered that using variables in the CoCoHue app on my C8 Pro was the key. By assigning a variable to the current scene before motion is detected, I could easily switch back after the 3-minute timer. It took some tweaking, but it works like a charm now!

Why I Love This Setup:
This automation not only enhances security but also adds a touch of elegance to my outdoor space. The seasonal color scenes really make the evenings feel special, and the bright white lights provide excellent visibility when needed. Plus, it’s all hands-off once everything is set up—perfect for someone who values convenience and efficiency.

Tips for Others:

  • Start simple and test each part of your automation separately before combining them.
  • Don’t hesitate to explore third-party apps like CoCoHue if they offer features your primary app doesn’t.
  • Keep a backup plan, like a manual override, just in case things don’t go as expected.
