Hi everyone,
I’m thrilled to share my journey as I plan to transform my new home into a smart haven. It’s an exciting yet overwhelming process, but I’m determined to create a seamless and efficient system. Here’s what I’ve been thinking about:
1. Choosing the Right Hub
I’ve decided to go with Hubitat as my central hub. It’s been praised for its reliability and flexibility, especially with zigbee devices. Pairing it with TP-Link Deco M9 mesh extenders should provide solid coverage across all floors. I’m curious about the delay when controlling devices on different floors—any experiences or tips would be appreciated!
2. Lighting Solutions
LIFX bulbs are my top choice for their brightness and color saturation. However, their integration with Hubitat isn’t fully native yet, so I’m keeping an eye on updates. If that doesn’t pan out, Hue might be a solid backup, especially with their ecosystem of switches and sensors.
3. Sensors and Security
I’m leaning towards a mix of door/ window sensors, thermostats, and maybe some security cameras. I’ve heard great things about Arlo cameras, but their recent issues with live feeds and short recordings have me a bit concerned. Any recommendations or troubleshooting tips would be invaluable.
4. Automation and Integration
Planning out automations is both thrilling and daunting. I want everything from lighting to sprinklers to be voice-controlled, preferably through Google Nest for consistency with my existing ecosystem. For those of you who’ve tackled similar projects, what were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?
5. Phased Implementation
Given the budget and complexity, I’m breaking this down into phases. Starting with essential lighting and security, followed by entertainment and climate control. I’m also exploring how to integrate my Apple devices smoothly into this setup.
6. Tips and Tricks
I’ve found that manually inputting data from unsupported sensors into Home Assistant is a helpful workaround. It keeps all my data in one place, which is great for tracking trends over time. Also, ensuring my VeraEdge’s Wi-Fi settings are optimized has improved overall performance—definitely worth checking!
I’m eager to hear your thoughts, experiences, and any advice you might have. Whether it’s about device recommendations, system design, or just sharing your own smart home journey, I’m all ears!
Looking forward to your insights!
Best regards,
Serge
