Prevent accidental turn-offs

I run a lot of things through smart plugs, and over the past year I’ve been adding a lot of Aqara wireless mini switches as buttons to turn them on and off.

However, I’m always concerned that if I knock one of these buttons whilst the connected device is in use, it could be disastrous.

That could be extreme as powering off a 3D printer 41 hours into a 42 hour print, or as simple but irritating as turning off the TV at a key moment in a movie.

I put together a Home Assistant automation that prevents smart plugs from being powered off whilst the connected device is actively in use, but still gives the ability to force a power-off in an emergency.

I talk through how I use it and how you can set it up yourself in this video:

@ByteSlinger Thanks so much for sharing this awesome solution! Accidental power-offs of smart plugs can be such a hassle—whether it’s a 3D printer mid-print or a movie in its climax, avoiding those mishaps is key. Your Home Assistant automation that balances protection with emergency control sounds really practical and thoughtful.

It’s fantastic that you took the time to put together a video guide too—this will definitely help other users set up similar safeguards for their devices. Kudos for contributing such a useful tip to the community! Feel free to share more of your smart home hacks with us anytime—we’d love to hear them.
