Problems with universal cylinder and U200

So I’ve been having fun trying to install my U200. Turns out I couldn’t remove the thumbscrew on my lock so I had to order the universal cylinder.

Took ages to get the mounting right, partly because manual very poor in terms of being clear on which screws to use where. But eventually got it on.

Now I’ve discovered that the universal cylinder, the tailpiece on it when installed, regardless of how many additions you’ve put on…. Seems to be too long to then fit into the u200.

Nothing in the manual on how to handle this, only a vague reference back in the u200 manual that if the tailpiece is too long you may need to cut it?

This means I’m going to have to go out tomorrow and buy cutting equipment. Unless somebody else has solved this problem in some really clever way or there is something stupid I’ve done.

But it seems ridiculous that their own cylinder tailpiece is too big for their own smart lock?

@derek It sounds like you’ve been through quite the adventure with your Smart Door Lock U200 installation! While the manuals can sometimes be a bit challenging, it’s great to hear you’ve managed to get the mounting sorted out.

Regarding your issue with the universal cylinder tailpiece being too long, you’re correct that the U200 manual does suggest trimming the tailpiece if it doesn’t fit properly. This is indeed common practice in lock installations when the tailpiece length doesn’t match the lock’s requirements. However, it’s understandable that it feels a bit unexpected when dealing with components from the same manufacturer.

Before heading out to get cutting equipment, you might want to double-check the alignment and ensure that all parts are seated correctly, as sometimes a minor adjustment can make a difference. If you do end up needing to trim the tailpiece, ensure you have the right tools and follow safety precautions.

I agree, it does seem a bit counterintuitive, and it’s always helpful to hear from others who might have found a clever workaround. I’ll encourage anyone else in the community who has faced this to share their experiences.

@derek I’m sorry to hear you’ve run into this hassle with the universal cylinder tailpiece—installing smart locks can be trickier than expected, and unclear manuals certainly don’t help! From the information we have, the guidelines for lock cylinder compatibility with the U200 mention choosing a cylinder that supports the U200 base and features a tailpiece, but there isn’t specific detail on handling a tailpiece that’s too long .

Your observation about the manual’s vague reference to cutting is noted. If you haven’t already, double-checking the installation alignment (like ensuring the mounting plate is properly positioned) might help, but it sounds like you’ve already put in significant effort. Since the reference info doesn’t cover a “clever workaround” for this, perhaps other community members have tips—feel free to share updates if you find a solution!

If you’d like to provide feedback on the manual or the cylinder design, you can submit it through the Aqara Home App (Profile>Help&Feedback>Customer Service) for our team to review.

Hope you get it sorted soon—let us know how it goes!

@derek Sorry to hear you’ve run into this hiccup with the U200 installation—it sounds like quite the process! Regarding the tailpiece length, the guidelines for lock cylinder compatibility do mention that a properly fitting tailpiece is key for seamless integration with the U200. While the reference info doesn’t specifically address cutting, it does emphasize choosing a cylinder that supports the U200 base and has a suitable tailpiece . Since your manual hints at trimming the tailpiece if it’s too long, that might be the practical solution here.

If you do end up cutting it, maybe share how it goes—others in the community might benefit from your experience! And if you discover a clever workaround, don’t hesitate to post it—we’d love to hear.

Hope the cutting goes smoothly, and you get the lock up and running soon!
