Project Showcase: Integrated Smart Tablet in Hallway

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my recent project with you all. During my hallway renovation, I integrated an affordable “Archos Arnova 10 G3” tablet into the wall. The mounting frame with a magnetic frame was laser-cut, and I chose an underlayment installation to keep everything hidden. I also installed an additional power outlet and a relay switch behind the mounting frame in a UP box.

On the home screen, I have the apps HomeDroid, IP-Cam Viewer (for my IP camera), and my Outlook calendar as a widget. Using the Websnap app (URL Image Widget), I display the current fuel prices from our local gas station every 5 minutes on the home screen. In Firefox, I have DashUI displayed (screenshots below).

The tablet turns on as soon as the motion detector in the hallway detects movement. I achieve this with “Tasker”. Here’s how it works:

  • When power is on, unlock the system and turn on the display
  • When power is off, lock the system
  • When battery level reaches 20%, send an HTTP GET request to turn on the relay switch to charge the battery

During the renovation, I also replaced the old analog door intercom with a Telegärtner Doorline a/b and connected it to the FritzBox, allowing all registered DECT phones to ring and answer when someone rings the bell, and to open the front door via the intercom.

I’ve attached some photos of the renovation below:

I’m really happy with how this project turned out and hope it might inspire someone else to try something similar!

Best regards,
Matthias
