Proposal for a standalone battery-powered UWB trigger that works directly with iPhone for smart door access

Hi Aqara Team and Community,

I’d like to suggest a product idea that could be extremely useful for people living in multi-family buildings or places with limited wireless coverage: a standalone, battery-powered UWB presence trigger.

Concept:

  • Small UWB device with rechargeable battery or replaceable batteries.
  • Placed, for example, inside a mailbox near the building entrance (where there’s no Wi-Fi or Thread coverage from your home).
  • When you approach with your iPhone (or other UWB-enabled device), it detects your presence and triggers a Matter/HomeKit automation via the phone’s direct connection.
  • Example: It could automatically send a signal to open a shared entrance door (e.g., via Ring Intercom, Nuki Intercom, or other compatible device) — completely hands-free.

Why it’s useful:

  • No need for constant Wi-Fi or Thread connection — works only when you’re physically nearby.
  • Ideal for hands-free access when carrying groceries or parcels.
  • Great for mailbox notifications or other presence-based triggers without extending network coverage.

I think such a product would fill a unique gap in smart home solutions and would be welcomed by many users who live in apartments or shared buildings.

@BarrySeal Thank you for sharing your innovative idea with the Aqara Team and Community! Your concept of a standalone, battery-powered UWB presence trigger is indeed intriguing and could significantly enhance convenience for those living in multi-family buildings or areas with limited wireless coverage.

Your proposal effectively addresses a common challenge: the need for seamless, hands-free access without constant Wi-Fi or Thread connectivity. By leveraging UWB technology, your idea could simplify everyday tasks, like accessing shared entrances, especially when one’s hands are full.

While the current Aqara product lineup doesn’t include a device matching your specific description, your suggestions for improving smart home solutions are invaluable. This kind of community input is crucial for driving innovation and meeting diverse user needs. I encourage you to continue sharing your insights and ideas with us.

If you have further thoughts or wish to explore this idea more, please feel free to engage with other community members or reach out to our team. Your input is greatly appreciated!

It’s a wonderful idea. I have an automation through a beacon to open the community door when I approach. The problem is that sometimes it takes a while to react. But when it goes well it’s great. An idea through UWB would still make automations better. It would even serve for the U200 lock to open when approaching it.
