QR Code Hack for Garage Door Calibration

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a little hack that I came up with for my garage door camera calibration. I’ve been dealing with this issue for a while now, and I thought I’d document my solution in case anyone else is facing the same problem.

So, the issue was that my camera was about 22 feet away from the garage door, which is beyond the recommended range. I tried calibrating it multiple times, but it just wouldn’t work, especially in the dark when the camera’s resolution effectively decreases. I was really frustrated because it seemed like such a simple problem, but I just couldn’t get it to work.

Then, I had this brainstorming moment. I remembered that QR codes can be scaled up or down, so I wondered if making the QR code larger would help the camera detect it more easily. I decided to give it a shot. I took the QR code sticker from the garage door, Xeroxed it, and enlarged it by about 50%. I then taped this larger QR code to the wall right next to the original one. It was like moving the camera about 7 feet closer to the door!

To my delight, it worked! The camera could now detect the larger QR code, and the calibration was a breeze. I was so excited that I even considered going to Office Depot to have them print a more permanent version on sticker paper. If they don’t have sticker paper in the size I need, I can always print the QR code in halves and overlap them to create one large image.

I just wanted to share this little hack in case anyone else is struggling with similar issues. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. I’d love to hear if anyone else has had success with this method or if they’ve come up with other creative solutions for their smart home devices. Happy hacking!
