Real-Time Updates and Device Integration in Smart Home Systems

Hello everyone, I’m excited to share my experiences and thoughts on integrating various smart home devices and ensuring real-time updates in my setup. As a homeowner who loves tinkering with technology, I’ve been exploring ways to make my home smarter and more efficient. However, I’ve encountered a few challenges along the way, and I’m hoping to get some insights or tips from the community.

One of the main issues I’ve faced is getting device status to update in real time across my dashboards. I use several old iPhones and iPads as dashboard devices in different rooms, connected via Local LAN links. While I can operate the devices just fine, I’ve noticed that I have to manually refresh the screens to get updated information, such as light statuses or sensor readings. This defeats the purpose of having a seamless smart home experience. I’m curious if others have faced similar issues and how they’ve resolved them. Maybe there’s a configuration tweak or a different approach to ensure real-time updates without manual intervention.

Another area I’m exploring is the integration of my Elko Super TR device, which functions as a thermostat or regulator. Currently, it’s set up as a regulator, allowing me to adjust the effect percentage from 0% to 100%. However, in Home Assistant, it still acts as a thermostat, displaying temperature settings instead of percentage values. I’ve tried modifying the configuration, but I can’t seem to change the unit or adjust the min/max values to reflect the percentage scale. Has anyone successfully converted a thermostat into a percentage-based regulator? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

On a lighter note, I recently acquired an IKEA Kadrilj cover, and it’s been a joy to control it via my smartphone. However, I noticed that the position of the cover doesn’t update in Home Assistant, which is a bit frustrating. The ‘up’ button remains greyed out, even though the cover responds to button presses and slider adjustments. I’m wondering if this is a common issue or if there’s a specific setting I need to adjust to ensure the position updates correctly.

Lastly, I wanted to share a positive experience I had with my SmartThings setup. Despite the occasional hiccups, the platform has been reliable and user-friendly. I recently set up a simple irrigation schedule using a NodeMCUv1 and 4 relays, and it’s been working flawlessly. The ability to control my garden’s watering system remotely has been a game-changer. I’m now looking into ways to ensure the system shuts down automatically if it loses WiFi connection, to prevent overwatering. I’m considering adding a local timeout feature, but I’m not sure how to implement it. If anyone has experience with similar projects, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Overall, my journey with smart home technology has been filled with both triumphs and challenges. The support from this community has been invaluable, and I’m excited to continue learning and improving my setup. If anyone has tips or tricks for real-time updates, device integration, or automation, please share them. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other create smarter, more connected homes!

Cheers,
