Reducing SmartThings Hub Data Usage: Tips and Tricks

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home tech and wanted to share some insights on reducing data usage with the SmartThings hub. I recently noticed my hub was consuming around 500MB per hour, which is way higher than the 1MB I’ve read about elsewhere. After some research and experimentation, here’s what I found and how I managed to bring it down.First, I realized that my cameras and Hue lamp were contributing significantly to the data usage. Disabling the cameras and Hue helped, but the data consumption was still high. So, I started looking into other possible culprits. My system has 51 devices, mainly sensors, cameras, and a HEMv1. I suspect the frequent updates from these devices might be the main issue. One thing I discovered is that the HEMv1 uses a lot of data due to its continuous monitoring. I decided to switch to a different energy monitoring solution that’s more data-efficient. Also, I found that adjusting the polling frequency on some sensors can make a big difference. Lowering how often they check in can reduce data usage without affecting performance too much.Another tip is to check if any devices are set to continuously upload data to the cloud. Disabling cloud backups or syncing for non-essential devices can help reduce the load. I also noticed that some devices have settings to control how frequently they send updates, so tweaking those settings can be really helpful. For anyone else dealing with high data usage, I recommend starting with a clean slate. Remove or disable any devices you don’t use frequently and review the settings on your active devices. It’s also a good idea to keep your hub firmware updated, as newer versions often include optimizations for data usage.I’d love to hear everyone’s experiences and tips on managing data usage with SmartThings. Let’s share our strategies and see if we can find even more ways to keep our smart homes efficient and our data usage in check!
