Relay Ease of Use

Hello. Long time Aqara user for various products but never the relay device. I’m considering going that route as an easier way to make my light switches smart. I’m a novice when it comes to electrical wiring in the home and fear figuring out how to write everything may be above my head. What are other experiences everyone has had getting them to work?

I think the relays are very easy to use, but that’s always relative to the experience you have.
Aqara has very nicely made tutorials on their website about the wiring, and the mode you want to use.
Follow them, make sure you connect the neutral and load properly.

That said… you should still exercise caution with electricity.
Few main things you should be careful about:

  • when stripping the wire, no part of the wire should be visible once set in the relay
  • when screwing in, make sure wires are secured in the relay. You should be able to pull without the wire coming loose.
  • Make sure you have no electricity on of course

That’s not exhaustive by any means.

Invest in some device that detects whether electricity is running through the wires.
At the very very least, there are cheap “pens” that detect live wire without touching them like the TESMEN TN-213.
Normally you should not rely only on this, but if you kill the main circuit breaker and test with this, it’s better than nothing.
