Resolving Firmware Update Issues on Shelly Devices

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience with updating firmware on Shelly devices. Recently, I encountered an issue where my Shelly Dimmer 2 unit was stuck on an old firmware version (1.7). Despite multiple attempts to update manually, it wouldn’t budge. Here’s how I navigated through this challenge and found a solution.

First, I checked the device status and noticed it was still operational but wouldn’t recognize any new firmware. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps: resetting the device, ensuring it was connected to the same network as other Shelly units, and verifying the firmware update through the Shelly app. None of these worked initially, which was quite frustrating.

After some research, I discovered that sometimes devices can get ‘locked’ in a state where they don’t respond to update commands. To address this, I decided to try a factory reset. I held the reset button for about 10 seconds until the LED started flashing, indicating a successful reset. This process essentially returned the device to its default settings, allowing it to connect anew to my network.

Once the device was back online, I attempted the firmware update again through the Shelly app. This time, it worked seamlessly! The device updated to the latest firmware without any issues. I was relieved and happy to have my Shelly unit functioning properly again.

This experience taught me the importance of a thorough reset when dealing with stubborn firmware updates. Sometimes, a simple reset can resolve complex issues. I hope this helps anyone else facing similar problems with their Shelly devices. Happy tinkering!
