Seasonal Light Automation Tips and Tricks

As the seasons change, automating outdoor lights to adapt to varying sunset times can be a real lifesaver. I’ve been experimenting with setting up my garden lights to turn on at sunset and stay on until at least 11 PM, regardless of the season. Here’s what I’ve learned and how you can achieve similar results!

My Setup:
I use Home Assistant with a mix of Zigbee and Wi-Fi enabled lights. The goal was to ensure the lights stay on long enough in the summer when the sun sets later and still provide ample lighting in the winter when it gets dark much earlier.

The Solution:

  1. Sunset Trigger: Start by setting up a sunset trigger. This is straightforward in most smart home platforms. I set mine to activate 12 minutes before sunset to ensure there’s enough light as the sun dips below the horizon.

  2. Timer with Conditional Logic: The tricky part was ensuring the lights stay on until at least 11 PM. I created a timer that resets if the time is still before 11 PM. This way, no matter when the sun sets, the lights will always stay on until the desired time.

  3. Brightness Adjustment: I also added a brightness adjustment to ensure the lights aren’t too harsh at night. They start at 70% brightness and dim slightly after a couple of hours.

Tips for Others:- Use Delays Wisely: If you want the lights to stay on longer after motion is detected, use delays in your automation rules.

  • Location-Based Adjustments: Consider adding latitude and longitude adjustments if you live in an area with extreme seasonal variations in daylight.
  • Create Custom Scenes: If you have multiple outdoor areas, create separate scenes for each to ensure targeted lighting.

Would love to hear how others are handling seasonal light automation! Any tricks or tips you’ve picked up along the way?
