I’m thrilled to join this amazing community and dive into the world of smart home automation. I’ve been doing some extensive research to plan out my entire home conversion, but I’m still a bit overwhelmed with all the options out there. I really want to get this right from the start to avoid any future headaches, so I’d love to hear your personal experiences and recommendations!
First off, I’m trying to decide on the best protocol to go with—Z-Wave, Zigbee, ESPHome, or Tasmota. I’ve read that each has its pros and cons, but I’m not entirely sure which one would be the most reliable and future-proof for my setup. If anyone has a strong opinion or has had great success with one of these, I’d love to hear about it!
Next, I’m considering the hardware side of things. Should I go with a Raspberry Pi 4 as my main hub? I’ve heard it’s a solid choice, but I’m not sure if there are better alternatives out there. As for dongles or radios, I’m still unclear on which ones would be the best fit for whichever protocol I end up choosing. Any insights would be super helpful!
On the software front, I’ve been leaning towards Home Assistant, but I’m curious if there are other platforms that might offer something unique or better suited for my needs. I’m really after quality and ease of use, so any recommendations there would be fantastic.
I’m also thinking about the overall ecosystem—how everything will integrate seamlessly. For example, I’d love to have my Google Calendar events automatically update my dashboard, but I’m not quite sure how to set that up. If anyone has a clever workaround or a step-by-step guide, I’d be eternally grateful!
Lastly, I’m really excited about the creative possibilities with smart lighting and home security. I’ve heard some amazing things about Wyze cameras and Govee lighting, but I’m still exploring how to customize and control them effectively. Any tips or tricks would be awesome!
