Setting up a smart crib light system has been an exciting project for me, especially with the arrival of our baby girl. I wanted to create a seamless automation that would help with nighttime changes and feedings without disturbing her sleep. Here’s how I tackled it and what I learned along the way.Initially, I purchased a Safety 1st crib light with its own motion sensor and ambient light sensor. The idea was to have the light turn on automatically when motion was detected and it was dark. However, the motion sensor wasn’t reliable, and the ambient light sensor didn’t work at all. This was frustrating, as I really wanted a hands-free solution.After some research, I decided to upgrade to a Govee mmWave sensor. I was excited about its potential, but I quickly realized that it didn’t have Alexa integration out of the box. This was a setback, as I rely heavily on Alexa for my smart home setup. I explored using IFTTT as a workaround, but it felt clunky and not the smooth experience I was hoping for.I then looked into integrating the sensor with SmartThings, which offered better routine creation capabilities. I found a compatible under-cabinet light and paired it with the mmWave sensor. The combination worked perfectly! The light now activates smoothly when motion is detected, and I can control it through Alexa without any issues.One thing I learned is the importance of checking device compatibility upfront. While the Govee mmWave sensor is excellent, its lack of native Alexa integration initially threw me off. However, by using SmartThings, I was able to bridge the gap and create the automation I needed.For anyone looking to set up a similar system, I recommend starting with reliable sensors and lights that are compatible with your preferred smart home ecosystem.
