I recently decided to enhance my morning routine by setting up custom clock chimes on my Google Home speakers. It’s been a fun project, and I’d like to share my experience in case anyone else is interested in doing something similar.
First, I wanted to play specific chimes at certain times, like the hourly or quarterly chimes. After some research, I discovered that I could use a combination of Google Home’s built-in features and a bit of automation to achieve this. I decided to use a simple IFTTT applet that triggers the Google Home to play a specific audio file at the desired times.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what I did:
- Selecting the Chimes: I found a website that offers a variety of clock chime sounds. I chose a few that I liked and downloaded them in MP3 format.
- Uploading to Google Drive: To make the files accessible, I uploaded them to my Google Drive. This way, I can easily reference them in my automation.
- Setting Up IFTTT: I created an applet in IFTTT that checks the current time and, if it matches the desired schedule (e.g., every hour at :00), sends a command to my Google Home to play the specific chime file from Google Drive.
- Testing and Adjustments: After setting it up, I tested it a few times to make sure everything worked smoothly. I also adjusted the schedule to ensure the chimes only played during the hours I wanted, like between 9 AM and 9 PM.
One thing I encountered was a minor issue with the Dyson bluetooth headphones not pairing with my Google TVStreamer. While it wasn’t directly related to the clock chimes project, it taught me the importance of checking Bluetooth settings and ensuring all devices are up to date. Thankfully, after a quick reset and update, the headphones paired without any problems.
Overall, this project has been a great way to personalize my smart home experience. It’s amazing how a little bit of creativity and some simple automation can make such a difference! I’m now looking into other ways to enhance my home’s ambiance, maybe even adding some dynamic lighting effects to complement the chimes. If anyone has tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
