Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experience setting up Somfy RS100 IO blinds with Home Assistant. I hope this helps someone who’s looking to automate their blinds without relying on the Somfy cloud. Spoiler alert: It’s doable, but there are a few steps involved!
The Setup
I’ve always been a fan of Somfy products, but I was hesitant to integrate them into my Home Assistant setup because I didn’t want to tie myself to the Somfy cloud. After some research, I discovered that the Somfy Connectivity Kit (model 1870755) could be the key to local control. Here’s how I made it work:
-
Connecting the Somfy Connectivity Kit
- I plugged in the kit and connected it to my Wi-Fi network using the Somfy TaHoma app.
- Once connected, I paired my RS100 IO blinds with the kit. The process was straightforward—just press the pair button on the kit and follow the instructions in the app.
-
Integrating with Home Assistant
- After pairing, Home Assistant automatically detected the kit and prompted me to add it to HomeKit. This allowed me to control the blinds using basic commands like “Up,” “Down,” and “Stop.”
- For more advanced features, like energy monitoring and luminance sensing, I needed to use the Overkiz integration. This required enabling developer mode in the Somfy app to get an API token.
-
Using the TaHoma Switch
- I also picked up a Somfy TaHoma Switch (model 1870594) to control my blinds manually. While it didn’t work with HomeKit out of the box, it was essential for adding new devices to my setup through the Somfy app.
Features I Love
- Energy Monitoring: The RS100 Solar IO version tracks energy usage in Watts, which is great for being eco-conscious.
- Luminance Sensing: It measures light in Lux, helping me decide when to adjust the blinds for optimal natural light.
- Battery Status: Always know when it’s time to replace the batteries without opening the device.
Tips for Others
- No Need for the Somfy Cloud: Once the Wi-Fi setup is done, you can uninstall the Somfy app. Local control works perfectly!
- Pairing New Devices: Unfortunately, you can’t add new devices directly through Home Assistant. You’ll need the Somfy app for that.
- Automation Potential: With Home Assistant, I’ve set up automations to close the blinds at sunset and open them at sunrise. It’s like having a personal valet for my windows!
Challenges I Faced
- Initial Setup Complexity: It took some time to figure out the right combination of hardware and software. Patience is key!
- API Token Required: Without the Somfy app and developer mode, integrating the TaHoma switch wasn’t possible.
Final Thoughts
I’m thrilled with how this setup turned out. It’s given me the local control I wanted without sacrificing the advanced features of the RS100 IO blinds. If you’re looking to automate your blinds without relying on the cloud, I highly recommend exploring the Somfy Connectivity Kit and Overkiz integration.
