Setting Up VPN for Home Assistant Automation

Hey everyone! I’m really excited to dive into this project and I hope you can help me figure it out. I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home automation setup, and I came across an interesting idea that I’d love to implement. Here’s what I’m thinking:

I want to set up my Home Assistant (HA) to connect to a remote network via VPN using WireGuard. The goal is for HA to download specific files from this network, securely transfer them, and then automatically back them up to my NAS using AutoBackup. The last part seems manageable, but I’m a bit stuck on the VPN connection aspect.

I found the Tailscale add-on, but I’m hesitant because it requires sharing login credentials with a third party. That feels a bit risky for my setup. I was also considering uploading the files to a public server first, but that feels like a workaround rather than a direct solution.

Has anyone here successfully set up a similar system? I’d love to hear about your experiences, challenges, and any tips you might have. Whether it’s about choosing the right VPN solution, securing the connection, or automating the backup process, I’m all ears!

This project feels like the next logical step in my home automation journey, and I’m eager to make it happen. Let’s see if we can crack this together!

Cheers,
