I recently decided to upgrade my home automation setup by integrating a Shelly 1 Plus UL switch into my system. After some initial research and experimentation, I wanted to share my experience and some tips that might help others who are looking to set up this device.
First, I must admit that I encountered a few challenges when trying to get the switch fully operational. Initially, I followed the standard wiring configuration: connecting the power supply hot to the ‘L’ terminal, neutral to ‘N’, load hot to ‘O’, and load neutral to ‘I’. I also set it up in both my Home Assistant (HA) instance and the Shelly phone app. The switch seemed to respond correctly when toggled, as I could hear the relay clicking. However, when I measured the voltage between terminals ‘O’ and ‘I’, I consistently got zero volts, which was perplexing.
After some troubleshooting, I realized that the issue might not be with the switch itself but rather with how I was testing it. I decided to try a different approach by disconnecting the load and focusing solely on the switch’s functionality. Surprisingly, the problem persisted, which led me to question whether there was a firmware or configuration issue.
I then compared the behavior of the Shelly 1 Plus UL with my existing Shelly Plus 2 PM, which I had already successfully integrated. The Plus 2 PM worked as expected with similar wiring, which made me confident that the issue was specific to the 1 Plus UL model.
To resolve this, I reached out to the Shelly community forums and found that others had encountered similar issues. It turned out that the problem was related to how the switch handles voltage under certain conditions. After updating the firmware and adjusting the configuration in the Shelly app, the switch began to function correctly.
This experience taught me the importance of thorough research and community support when integrating new devices into a smart home setup. The Shelly 1 Plus UL is a fantastic device once properly configured, and I’m now able to control my lights and appliances seamlessly through both the Shelly app and my HA instance.
If anyone else is having trouble with their Shelly 1 Plus UL, I recommend checking the firmware version, consulting the official documentation, and reaching out to the community for guidance. Happy automating! ![]()
