Shelly 1PM Mini Plus Installation Troubleshooting and Solution

I recently installed a Shelly 1PM Mini Plus in my home, and I encountered a few challenges that I’d like to share with the community. Hopefully, this can help others who might be facing similar issues!

The Setup:
I installed the Shelly 1PM Mini Plus in a wall outlet as part of a circuit with four different sockets. The goal was to monitor and control the power usage of some devices in that circuit. After setting up the device, I opened the Shelly app, went through the sign-up process, and tried to add the device. However, the app couldn’t find the device, neither over Bluetooth nor through my Wi-Fi network. I was a bit confused because I didn’t see a new Wi-Fi network being created by the Shelly device either.

The Process of Elimination:
I started by checking the most obvious things:

  • I pressed the tiny button on the Shelly device for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, and even longer, just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.
  • I reset my router to see if that would help the Shelly device connect.
  • I checked the Wi-Fi settings on my phone to ensure I wasn’t inadvertently blocking the Shelly device.

Nothing worked. I felt a bit stuck, but I decided to dig deeper. I reached out to the Shelly community and forums, and I found that others had similar issues. It turned out that the problem wasn’t with the device itself but with the way the circuit was wired. The Shelly 1PM Mini Plus requires a specific type of wiring to function properly, and my circuit didn’t meet those requirements.

The Solution:
After some research, I discovered that the Shelly 1PM Mini Plus needs to be installed in a way that allows it to detect power changes effectively. This means that the circuit shouldn’t have any other devices that could interfere with the power monitoring. I ended up rewiring the circuit to isolate the Shelly device, and that did the trick!

Lessons Learned:
This experience taught me the importance of understanding the specific requirements of a device before installation. It also highlighted the value of community support—without the insights from other users, I might still be struggling with this issue.

Tips for Others:
If you’re planning to install a Shelly 1PM Mini Plus or any similar device, here are a few tips:

  • Check the wiring requirements carefully.
  • Test the device in a simple circuit before integrating it into a more complex setup.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to the community if you’re stuck. Someone else might have faced the same challenge!

I’m happy to say that my Shelly 1PM Mini Plus is now working perfectly, and it’s providing me with valuable insights into my home’s energy usage. It’s a great feeling to overcome a challenge and learn something new in the process!
