Shelly Device Configuration Challenges and Solutions

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with configuring Shelly devices in my smart home setup. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I managed to work through the issues, and I thought I’d document my journey here in case it helps someone else.

The Setup
I recently purchased a Shelly Plus 1PM to monitor the energy consumption of my balcony solar power system. The goal was to track how much energy is being fed back into the grid and ensure everything is running efficiently. Initially, the device seemed to work fine—it was detecting the correct power levels and voltage. However, I noticed something odd when checking the consumption metrics in the Shelly app.

The Problem
Despite the solar panels being capped at 600W, the app was showing a much higher consumption value. Specifically, the hourly usage was pegged at 775Wh, which didn’t make sense given the system’s limitations. I was puzzled—was the device miscalculating the energy usage, or was there a setting I hadn’t configured correctly?

The Investigation
I started by reviewing the device’s settings in the Shelly app. Everything seemed to be in order, with the power limits set correctly. I also checked the hardware connections to ensure there were no loose wires or issues with the sensors. After confirming that the hardware was functioning properly, I began to suspect that the problem might lie in how the app was interpreting the data.

The Solution
After some research, I discovered that the Shelly app uses a specific algorithm to calculate energy consumption. In some cases, especially with solar power systems, this algorithm can overestimate the usage if not properly calibrated. To address this, I reached out to the Shelly community forums and found a helpful guide on adjusting the device’s settings to match the system’s actual capacity.

By tweaking the power thresholds and recalibrating the sensors, I was able to get the consumption readings back in line with what I expected. It was a bit of a trial and error process, but persistence paid off!

Lessons Learned
This experience taught me the importance of thoroughly understanding the settings and algorithms behind smart home devices. What seemed like a straightforward installation turned into a valuable learning opportunity about energy monitoring systems. If you’re encountering similar issues with your Shelly devices, don’t hesitate to reach out to the community for support—there are plenty of knowledgeable users who are happy to help.

Happy tinkering everyone! :rocket:
