Using the Aqara Vibration Sensor attached to a standard dog door bells accessory, which is a hanging belt with bells on it that a dog can hit. It is common to use these dog door bells to train your dog to hit them when they want to go potty/outside, but in my case, they are on the other side of the house and can’t be heard from most places in the house. By attaching the Aqara Vibration Sensor, the dog can use the bells like normal, but I can then automate based on the sensor to announce that my dog wants to go out. I keep the bells hanging on a hook next to the backdoor so that it doesn’t go off every time the door is opened, but they could be hung from the handle as intended just fine.
To make this work, I have the Aqara Vibration Sensor connected to the Aqara Hub M2, which is in turn connected to Home Assistant to expose the Vibration Sensor to Home Assistant. In Home Assistant, I have an automation set up to respond to the sensor detecting motion/vibration, which then triggers a Broadcast command sent to the Home Assistant Voice and Google Smart Speakers throughout the house to announce that my dog wants to go outside. With the flexibility of Home Assistant, I could also change the color of a light, blink a light, use a push notification to our phones, or any other kind of alert you can think of piecing together with smart devices.
In a simpler form, this can be done by using the Aqara app notifications as well to let you know when the Vibration is sensed.
To complete the dog automation, I also have a smart doormat and security camera at the backdoor that broadcasts another message the same way as previously described to announce that my dog wants to come back inside.
