Hi everyone!
I’m thrilled to share my journey as I prepare to set up my new smart apartment.
I’ve been researching and planning for months, and I’m eager to get started. I wanted to gather your thoughts and experiences on a few key areas to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Networking & Connectivity
I’m leaning towards using Ubiquiti UniFi for my network setup. I’ve had great experiences with their products in the past, and the AC Pro seems like a solid choice for coverage. If I run into any dead zones, I can always add another one later. I’m curious if anyone has tips on optimizing coverage in a small apartment or if there are alternative solutions that might offer better performance or flexibility.
Multi-Room Audio
For audio, I’m planning a DIY approach using UP2Stream WiFi modules. I love the idea of having wireless speakers throughout the apartment, but I’m not entirely sure about the best setup for multi-room synchronization. Any recommendations or potential pitfalls to watch out for would be appreciated!
Security & Sensors
I’m equipping every room with wired DHT22 and PIR sensors connected directly via Ethernet to a Raspberry Pi or Node MCU. This setup should provide reliable environmental monitoring and motion detection. However, I’m open to suggestions on more advanced or user-friendly alternatives that might simplify the integration with my existing smart home ecosystem.
Lighting & Automation
I’m a bit stuck on finding a budget-friendly solution for dimmable LED strips. I’ve heard great things about Shelly controllers, but I’m not entirely sure which one would be the best fit for my needs. Additionally, I’m looking for recommendations on LED strip brands that offer good quality and compatibility with Home Assistant.
Firmware & Updates
I’ve noticed that some devices, like my Arlo Pro 3 camera, frequently prompt for firmware updates that never seem to complete. Does anyone have a reliable method for ensuring smooth firmware updates across various devices? I’d love to avoid the frustration of interrupted updates and potential connectivity issues.
Tips & Tricks
I came across a handy tip for organizing cables and ensuring a clean setup. Using cable ties and labeling everything clearly has made my planning phase much more manageable. I’d love to hear if others have similar organizational hacks or best practices for maintaining a clutter-free and efficient smart home setup.
Closing Thoughts
This project is a mix of excitement and nervousness, but I’m confident that with the right planning and your insights, I can create a smart, functional, and enjoyable living space. Thank you all in advance for your advice and support! ![]()
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences! Let’s make this apartment the smartest on the block! ![]()
