Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project setting up smart aquarium lighting using the Sylvania Lightify outdoor light strip. While it wasn’t my first attempt at smart lighting, it definitely brought some unique challenges and rewards!
Setup & Challenges
I’ve always wanted to simulate natural lighting conditions for my African Chiclid tank. After some research, I decided on the Sylvania Lightify strip for its waterproof design. The initial setup was straightforward—mounting the strip and connecting it to my SmartThings hub. However, creating a seamless automation was the real challenge.
Automation & Customization
Using webCoRE, I programmed a daily lighting cycle to mimic sunrise, daylight, sunset, and nighttime. It was a bit of a trial and error process, especially ensuring the lights didn’t stay on too long or turn off abruptly. I also integrated weather data so the lighting adjusts based on outdoor conditions—perfect for when I want a brighter setup for my wife in the evenings!
Integration & Alexa Control
One of the highlights was enabling Alexa voice controls. Now, I can simply ask Alexa to adjust the lighting without needing to pull out my phone. It’s these little conveniences that make the whole setup worth it!
Results & Satisfaction
The end result is stunning. My fish seem more active during the simulated daylight, and the gradual transitions prevent any sudden stress. Plus, being able to control everything remotely is a huge plus!
Tips for Others
If you’re considering a similar setup, here are a few tips:
- Start with basic on/off automations before diving into complex schedules.
- Test different lighting durations to observe how your fish react.
- Don’t hesitate to use weather integrations for added realism.
I’d love to hear how others have approached similar projects or any creative automation ideas you’ve implemented for aquariums or other unique spaces! ![]()
