Smart Bath Automation with HomeKit and SmartThings

I recently completed a bathroom renovation project that integrated smart lighting and music automation, and I wanted to share my experience. The goal was to create a seamless experience where turning on the lights and playing music via Airplay would happen automatically when I start my shower. Here’s how I pulled it all together.Hardware Setup - Apple TV 4K: Serves as the Airplay receiver. - Klipsch Light Speaker: Installed in the ceiling, providing both lighting and audio. - Z-Wave Light Switches and Outlets: Control the lights and speakers. - HDMI Converter: Connects the Apple TV to the bathroom setup.Software Configuration - Homebridge: Acts as a bridge between HomeKit and SmartThings. - Homebridge-smartthings: Integrates SmartThings devices into HomeKit. - Homebridge-dacp: Enables Airplay integration. - Core SmartApp: Handles the automation logic.Implementation Steps 1. Hardware Installation: Installed the Klipsch speakers and connected them to Z-Wave switches and outlets. 2. SmartThings Setup: Created virtual switches in SmartThings to represent the bathroom speakers. 3. HomeKit Configuration: Added the Apple TV as a switch in HomeKit and configured the virtual switches. 4. Automation Rules: Set up automations in SmartThings to trigger the lights and music when an Airplay stream starts.Final Outcome Now, all I have to do is say, “Hey Siri, turn on the bathroom speaker,” or start an Airplay stream, and everything turns on automatically. The integration of HomeKit and SmartThings has made my bathroom experience truly smart and enjoyable. This project was a great way to combine multiple technologies and create a cohesive smart home experience. I hope this helps others looking to integrate similar systems in their homes!
