Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my recent project where I automated my bathroom shower fan using motion detection. It’s been a fun challenge, and I think others might find this useful too!
So, here’s the setup: I have a motion sensor in my bathroom, and I wanted the shower fan to turn on only after the motion has been active for more than a minute. This way, it avoids turning on accidentally if someone quickly walks by. If the motion stops, the fan should turn off after 10 minutes. Sounds simple, but getting it right took some tweaking!
I started by exploring the rule machine in my smart home hub. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the options, but breaking it down step by step helped. I set up a rule where the motion sensor triggers a countdown timer. If the motion continues for over a minute, the timer completes, and the fan turns on. If the motion stops before that, the fan stays off. It’s all about timing and ensuring the logic flows correctly.
One thing I learned is the importance of testing thoroughly. I tested different scenarios—like moving around for less than a minute, exactly a minute, and more than a minute—to see how the system responds. It was a bit trial and error, but each test brought me closer to the perfect setup.
Now, the system works seamlessly! When I step into the bathroom, the motion sensor kicks in. If I stay for more than a minute, the fan starts, providing that much-needed ventilation. If I leave before that, it stays off, saving energy. And when I’m done, the fan automatically turns off after 10 minutes, ensuring no energy is wasted.
This project has made my mornings so much more convenient. No more manually turning the fan on and off—it’s all handled automatically. Plus, it’s been a great way to integrate technology into my daily routine without it feeling intrusive.
