Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent journey in automating my bathroom experience. It’s been a fascinating project, and I thought I’d walk you through some of the highlights and challenges I encountered along the way.
The Goal: A Seamless Bathroom Experience
I’ve always been a fan of using technology to enhance daily routines, and the bathroom is no exception. My primary objectives were to automate the bathroom fan and lights based on occupancy and humidity levels, while also ensuring energy efficiency.
Humidity and Occupancy Detection
I started by installing a humidity sensor paired with a motion detector. The idea was simple: when someone enters the bathroom and the humidity rises (indicating a shower), the fan and lights turn on automatically. This part worked like a charm, and I was thrilled with how seamless it felt. However, there was one missing piece—air quality.
The Challenge of Air Quality
I noticed that even after the shower, the fan would shut off once the humidity dropped, but the lingering smells remained. This led to some awkward moments, especially with houseguests. I wanted the fan to stay on until the air was truly fresh. After some research, I stumbled upon the Estimote Presence Detection solution. It uses Bluetooth beacons to detect when someone is in the bathroom, ensuring the fan runs long enough to clear out any unpleasant odors. This was a game-changer!
Integration with Smart Devices
Another aspect I focused on was integrating these sensors with my existing smart devices. I set up routines using Alexa so that when the bathroom fan turns on, the lights adjust to a comfortable brightness. It’s these small touches that make the experience feel truly smart.
Unexpected Hiccups
Of course, no project is without its bumps. I encountered an issue with my Wyze Cam V3 where playback wasn’t working, even though the camera was recording events. After some troubleshooting, I realized it was a firmware issue. A simple reset and update later, everything was back to normal. It’s moments like these that remind me how important it is to stay updated with the latest firmware and software patches.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on this project, I’m amazed at how much technology can enhance something as simple as using the bathroom. The combination of humidity sensors, motion detectors, and smart cameras has transformed what was once a routine task into a genuinely enjoyable experience. I’m already brainstorming ways to take this setup to the next level, maybe even integrating some aromatherapy for a spa-like feel!
If anyone has tips or suggestions for improving this setup, I’d love to hear them. Happy automating everyone! ![]()
