I recently undertook a smart bathroom lighting project, and I’d love to share my experience and some tips with the community. I wanted to create a system that would automatically adjust based on time of day, ensuring convenience and energy efficiency. Here’s how I approached it:The Setup:- Devices Used: Kasa Switch (Wi-Fi), Sengled RGBW Light Bulb (Zigbee), ZooZ Motion Sensor (Z-Wave)- Platform: Home Assistant (HA)**Objective:**Between sunrise and midnight, the bathroom lights should function normally—meaning the switch controls the bulb. However, from midnight to sunrise, I wanted the motion sensor to activate the light, setting it to a soft red (30% brightness). This was to ensure nighttime convenience without being too harsh.**Challenges and Solutions:**1. Motion Sensor Activation at Midnight: Initially, I struggled with ensuring the light switch remained on after midnight so the motion sensor could trigger the bulb. I discovered that setting up a timer to turn the switch on at midnight and off at sunrise was the solution. This involved creating a rule in HA that activates the switch at midnight and deactivates it at sunrise.2. Automation with HA: I utilized HA’s rule machine to automate this process. The automation triggers at midnight, turning the switch on, and at sunrise, turning it off. This ensures that during the overnight hours, the motion sensor can control the bulb without interference.3. Color Adjustment: Setting the bulb to red at 30% brightness was straightforward using HA’s color control settings. This provides just enough light for nighttime needs without being disruptive.Additional Tips:- Power Banks for Backlighting: If you’re looking to install lights in areas without outlets, consider using power banks. They’re portable and can keep your lights running even in the most inconvenient locations.- Testing and Tweaking: Don’t hesitate to test your setup thoroughly. Adjust timings and brightness levels as needed to suit your lifestyle.**Outcome:**The result is a seamless, hands-free bathroom lighting system that adapts to my daily routine.
