I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my smart home setup, and I’m thrilled to share my recent project! After struggling with inconsistent sleep tracking, I decided to integrate contact sensors into my bedroom automation system. Here’s how it transformed my experience:
The Challenge:
I wanted a reliable way to automatically control my bedroom lights and curtains based on whether I was in bed or not. Traditional motion sensors weren’t cutting it because they often misread or had too many false triggers.
The Solution:
I installed two contact sensors under my mattress. These sensors detect pressure changes when someone lies down or gets up. Pairing them with a Shelly i4 DC gateway allowed me to integrate the system seamlessly with my Homey setup.
The Setup:
- Pressure Sensors: Mounted under the mattress with small spacers to ensure consistent contact.
- Shelly Gateway: Handles the low-power signals from the sensors.
- Homey App: Configures the automation rules for lights, curtains, and other connected devices.
The Results:
It’s been a game-changer! Now, when I climb into bed, the room dims to a preset night mode, and the curtains close automatically. In the morning, the lights gently brighten as I start to stir. I even added a 2-second delay in the automation to account for any minor sensor fluctuations when I toss and turn.
Tips for Others:
- Placement Matters: Experiment with sensor placement to ensure consistent readings.
- Test Delays: Small delays can prevent false triggers from minor movements.
- Combine with Other Sensors: Pair contact sensors with light sensors for even smarter automation.
This project has not only improved my sleep routine but also made my bedroom feel like a true smart home sanctuary. I’m excited to see how else I can expand this setup in the future! ![]()
