Hi everyone! I wanted to share a fun project I recently completed to make my coffee machine smarter. I’ve always loved the convenience of smart home devices, but I was running into some issues with my morning coffee routine. Let me walk you through how I transformed my ordinary coffee machine into a smart appliance using a Z-Wave switch.### The ProblemI started by plugging my coffee machine into a smart plug. While this worked for turning the machine on and off remotely, it wasn’t a perfect solution. I noticed that I often forgot to manually switch the machine to “on” after setting it up the night before. This meant that even though the smart plug was on, the machine wouldn’t brew my coffee because it wasn’t in the right mode. It was frustrating to realize that I had to interact with both the smart plug and the machine’s physical switch every morning.### The SolutionTo eliminate this confusion, I decided to hack the coffee machine itself by installing a Fibaro Z-Wave switch. This way, there’s only one power switch controlling the machine, and it’s fully integrated into my smart home setup. Here’s how I did it:1. Installed the Fibaro Switch: I carefully added the switch to the machine, ensuring it would fit seamlessly into the existing design.2. Integrated with Home Assistant: I configured the switch in Home Assistant so I could control it through my voice assistant or mobile app.3. Automated the Brewing Process: I set up a routine so that in the mornings, the switch turns on at my desired time, ensuring my coffee is ready when I wake up.### A Little StoryThe best part of this project was the unexpected help from my cat, Harry, who kept “assisting” me during the installation. While I was soldering wires, Harry kept knocking over my tools, but his curiosity added a fun element to the process. You can see some of the photos and details of the hack on my GitHub page here.### Why This MattersThis modification has completely transformed my morning routine. I no longer have to worry about manually switching the machine on or off. It’s now fully integrated into my smart home ecosystem, and I can control it from anywhere. Plus, it’s been a great learning experience, and I’m excited to tackle more smart home projects in the future. If anyone has similar projects or tips for integrating older appliances into a smart home setup, I’d love to hear about them! Let’s keep the ideas flowing and make our homes smarter one project at a time. ![]()
