Smart Coffee Maker Automation Project

Hey everyone,

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation lately, and I wanted to share a fun project I’ve been working on—automating my coffee maker! :medal_military:

The Goal:
I wanted to create a system where my coffee maker starts brewing right when I wake up, without me having to lift a finger. The idea is to tie it into my existing morning routine automations, like turning on the lights and opening the blinds.

The Setup:
I’m using a smart plug to control the coffee maker, paired with my existing Google Home setup. The plan was to trigger the plug to turn on at a specific time, but I wanted to add some extra features:

  • A confirmation notification to my phone so I know it’s brewing.
  • A secondary check to ensure the coffee maker is actually on (in case of any hiccups in the system).

The Challenges:

  1. Timing: Getting the timing just right has been a bit tricky. I don’t want the coffee to start brewing too early, but I also don’t want to risk it not being ready when I wake up.
  2. Sensor Data: I considered adding a sensor to monitor the coffee maker’s status, but I’m not sure how to integrate that yet. Any tips on this would be amazing!
  3. Automation Logic: I’m still getting the hang of setting up nested automations. I want the system to send a notification if it fails to start brewing, but I’m not entirely sure how to set that up.

Current Progress:
So far, I’ve got the basic automation working. The coffee maker turns on at 7:00 AM, and I get a notification confirming it. It’s a small win, but it’s exciting to see everything come together!

Looking for Feedback:
If anyone has experience with similar projects or knows how to add that extra layer of confirmation, I’d love to hear from you! Also, any advice on making the system more robust or adding additional features would be super helpful.

Thanks for reading, and happy brewing! :coffee:

Best,
