Smart Doorbell Integration with Alexa

Hey everyone, I’ve been on a journey to integrate my smart devices seamlessly with Alexa, and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else.

Recently, I upgraded my doorbell system from a traditional Ring model to the Tapo D230s1. While I was excited about the Tapo’s battery efficiency, I quickly realized it doesn’t integrate as smoothly with Alexa as I hoped. Specifically, the live stream feature, which was a lifesaver with my old Ring, wasn’t available through the Tapo app.

However, I didn’t want to give up on the live view functionality. After some research, I discovered that I could still trigger a live view from my other cameras using Alexa’s built-in routines. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Identify the Trigger: I set up the Tapo doorbell to send a notification to my phone when someone rings.
  2. Create an Alexa Routine: Using Alexa’s skills, I created a routine where the notification triggers a live view from one of my other cameras.
  3. Automation in HA: I also integrated this into my Home Assistant setup, where the notification from the Tapo doorbell triggers a popup with a live stream from another camera.

This workaround has been a lifesaver! I still get the live view I need, even though it’s not directly from the Tapo doorbell.

For anyone else looking to integrate their devices, here are a few tips:

  • Check Compatibility: Always verify if your devices are compatible with your preferred ecosystem (like Alexa or Google Home) before purchasing.
  • Use Routines: Don’t underestimate the power of routines. They can help bridge gaps between devices that aren’t natively integrated.
  • Community Support: If you run into issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to forums like this one. The community is incredibly helpful!

I’d love to hear if anyone else has creative solutions for integrating devices that aren’t directly compatible. Let’s keep the conversation going!

Cheers,
Mirko
