Smart Garage Lighting and Beyond: My Journey with Connected Devices

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a little about my experience setting up smart lighting in my garage. It’s been a fun project, but I hit a snag that I thought others might relate to or even offer solutions for.

So, I’ve got two motion sensors and a door contact sensor in my garage. Everything works as intended—lights turn on when I enter and off when I leave. But here’s the thing: sometimes I want the lights to stay on because I plan to be in there for a while. The automation turns them on, but how do I tell the system, ‘Okay, keep them on until I’m done’? I guess I could just switch them off manually when I’m ready, but that feels a bit old-school.

I was thinking about adjusting the timeout settings on the motion sensors. Maybe a longer timeout would help, so if I’m still moving around, the lights stay on. But I’m not sure how that would interact with the door sensor. Would it override the timeout if the door closes? I’m not entirely sure, so I’m curious if anyone has a better approach or workaround.

Beyond the garage, I’ve been really impressed with how connected devices have transformed my daily routine. For instance, my Wyze cameras have been a game-changer, though I had some initial trouble reconnecting them after changing my Wi-Fi password. I ended up having to update the Wyze app, which made the process much smoother.

I also wanted to give a shoutout to Govee. Their Christmas Sparkle String Lights added a festive touch to my home, and I love how easy they are to control via the app. If anyone is looking for affordable, reliable smart lighting, I highly recommend checking them out.

Back to the garage, I’m still brainstorming ways to make the lighting system more intuitive. Maybe integrating a smart switch or using voice commands to override the automation? I’m open to suggestions and would love to hear how others have tackled similar challenges.

Happy tinkering everyone! :rocket:
