I’ve recently embarked on a project to transform my garage into a smarter, more convenient space, and I’d love to share my experience with you all! ![]()

The Challenge:
My garage was often too dark, making it hard to find things or even park properly. I wanted a solution that would automatically light up when I arrived, but also respect energy efficiency when the space wasn’t in use.
The Solution:
I decided to integrate motion sensors with Govee smart light bulbs. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I managed to set everything up using the SmartThings platform. Here’s what I did:
-
Motion Sensors:
I installed two motion sensors on opposite walls to cover the entire garage area. This ensures that no matter where I am in the garage, the lights will detect my presence. -
Govee Bulbs:
I chose the Govee RGBIC strips for their brightness and color versatility. They were easy to install and paired perfectly with my existing fixtures. -
Automation Rules:
Using SmartThings, I created a rule where the lights turn on at 50% brightness when motion is detected. After 5 minutes of no movement, they dim to 20% to save energy but still provide some ambient light.
Unexpected Benefits:
What I didn’t expect was how much this setup has improved my daily routine. No more fumbling for switches in the dark, and it’s been a lifesaver during late-night trips to the garage!
Tips for Others:
- Placement is Key: Make sure your motion sensors are positioned correctly to avoid blind spots.
- Test, Test, Test: Don’t be afraid to tweak your automation rules. What works for me might not work for you!
- Battery Life: I opted for sensors with long-lasting batteries to minimize maintenance.
I’d love to hear how others have tackled similar projects or if you have any tips to improve my setup! ![]()
