Smart Garden Monitoring and Automation Setup

Hey everyone! I’m really excited to share my recent project where I set up a smart garden monitoring system. I’ve been wanting to automate my vegetable patch to keep track of moisture levels and ensure my plants get just the right amount of water. I decided to use several capacitive moisture sensors connected to my SmartThings ecosystem. It’s been a fun challenge!

I started by wiring up the sensors and testing them in different areas of my garden. The goal was to have alerts when the soil gets too dry, and eventually, I plan to add a valve to automate watering using my elevated water butt. I was a bit stuck on how to get the sensors to communicate with SmartThings without a lot of custom coding, but after some research, I found that using an Arduino as an intermediary was the way to go. It allows me to handle the analog signals from the sensors and send data to SmartThings via Z-Wave.

I’d love to hear if anyone has experience with similar setups or if there are more efficient ways to achieve this. Also, I’m curious about how others handle automation for watering—do you use valves, sprinklers, or something else?

On another note, I’ve been exploring integrating my garden lights with Hubitat. I found some really cool RGBIC TV Light Bars that I’m planning to use for ambient lighting. They’ve been a hit so far! If anyone has tips on customizing lighting setups, I’d love to hear them.

Lastly, I want to give a shoutout to the community for all the support and resources. It’s amazing how much you can learn and achieve with the right guidance. Thanks everyone! :seedling::bulb:
