Smart Home Automation: Automated Furnace Humidifier Control

Winter can be tough, especially when it comes to maintaining the right humidity levels in your home. This year, I decided to tackle this challenge head-on by automating my furnace humidifier. The result? A seamless, hands-off system that adjusts humidity based on outdoor temperature. Here’s how I did it and why I’m so excited about the results.

The core components of this setup include a Xiaomi Aqara humidity sensor and a LINEAR FS20Z-1 Z-Wave relay module. The sensor provides real-time humidity and temperature data, while the relay module handles the switching of the humidifier. The integration was surprisingly straightforward, and the system has been running flawlessly for weeks.

Automation Logic: The key to this system is the automation script I developed. It calculates the target humidity using a simple formula based on outdoor temperature and adjusts the humidifier accordingly. This ensures that my home stays comfortable without any manual intervention. I also set up notifications to keep track of the system’s status, which has been invaluable for troubleshooting during the initial setup phase.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been my wife’s reaction. She’s never been as enthusiastic about smart home tech as I am, but seeing how this automation simplifies her daily routine has made her a believer. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love diving into these projects—they truly make life better.
