After remodeling an apartment in Europe for short-term rentals, I decided to integrate smart home automation to enhance guest comfort and streamline management. My goal was to create a seamless system that could control AC units, detect occupancy, and automate daily routines. Here’s how I made it happen!
1. AC Unit Control via WiFi
I wanted to ensure that the AC units could be controlled remotely and automatically. After some research, I found that brands like Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin offer WiFi-enabled mini-split units that integrate perfectly with Home Assistant. The key was avoiding IR controllers and sticking to native WiFi connectivity for reliability.
2. Occupancy Detection
To monitor whether the apartment was occupied, I installed Google Nest Hub devices and Wyze Cam Pan cameras. These devices work seamlessly with my Home Assistant setup and provide real-time alerts if motion is detected when it shouldn’t be. It’s a great way to ensure security without being intrusive.
3. Door Lock Automation
One of my favorite automations involves door lock status checks. Every evening at 9 PM, my system verifies if all doors are locked. If any door is open, it sends a notification to my phone and plays a gentle reminder on the apartment’s speakers. This has significantly reduced the risk of accidents or theft.
4. Energy Efficiency
I also integrated energy monitoring using Emoncms to track electricity usage in real-time. This helps me optimize the AC settings and ensure that the system runs efficiently, which is great for both the environment and my wallet.
5. Guest Experience
For guests, I created a simple interface using Lovelace cards that let them control lighting, temperature, and entertainment systems with ease. It’s been a huge hit, and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
This project has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’m thrilled with how everything came together. If you’re looking to automate your vacation rental or home, I highly recommend exploring these solutions!
