I wanted to share my recent journey with setting up a smart aquarium system using Rule Machine and an IKEA zigbee plug. It’s been quite the learning experience, and I hope my insights can help others who are starting out with automation.
The Goal:
I have an aquarium with a surface skimmer pump that I want to automate. The pump needs to toggle on/off every 15 minutes to prevent shrimp from getting sucked in, and it should completely turn off for an hour when the automatic feeder drops food. Initially, I managed to set up both functions separately, but combining them into one rule with a pause was proving challenging.
The Setup:
I connected the IKEA zigbee plug to the aquarium pump and started experimenting with Rule Machine. After some trial and error, I figured out how to create a rule that toggles the pump every 15 minutes and adds a one-hour pause when the feeder is activated. It wasn’t straightforward, but breaking it down into smaller steps made it manageable.
Challenges and Solutions:
One issue I encountered was ensuring the rule didn’t interfere with other automations. I learned the importance of testing each part of the rule individually before combining them. Another challenge was timing the pause correctly so it didn’t disrupt the overall automation flow. Using variables and triggers helped me achieve the desired behavior.
