Hey everyone, I wanted to share some of my recent experiences with home automation and get your thoughts on a few things I’ve been working on. First off, I’ve been diving into setting up a more integrated system using various smart devices, and it’s been both exciting and a bit challenging. Let me walk you through what I’ve been up to.
One of the projects I’ve been working on involves integrating a Shelly Dimmer 2 into my existing lighting setup. I’ve been using Eltako switches for years, and while they work perfectly, I wanted the convenience of controlling my lights via my smartphone. I’ve heard great things about the Shelly Dimmer, but I was a bit unsure if it could fully replace the functionality of my current setup. After some research and consulting with an electrician, I decided to give it a try. The installation went smoothly, and I’m thrilled with how it’s working so far. It’s amazing how seamlessly it integrates with my existing system!
Another area I’ve been focusing on is automating my lighting based on different modes. I’ve been using Mode Manager to switch between ‘Home’ and ‘Away’ modes, but I’ve run into a bit of a snag. When I’m away, I want my lights to follow a different schedule—one that’s less frequent and dimmer than when I’m home. I’ve set up severalAway modes, but I’m struggling with getting them to transition smoothly based on time. Has anyone successfully implemented something similar? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!
On the software side, I’ve been experimenting with PLC programming to set up more complex automations. For instance, I have a motion detector on my porch that I want to trigger specific actions after 11:30 PM, like turning on the front lights and locking the door. However, I also want this automation to deactivate at 6 AM so it doesn’t interfere with my morning routine. I’ve read through some examples, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around the logic. If anyone has experience with this, I’d love to hear how you approached it!
Lastly, I’ve been exploring the use of templates in my setup. I’ve created a few templates for different devices, and I’m really impressed with how customizable they are. However, I’ve hit a roadblock when it comes to nesting templates. I’d love to be able to access and modify parameters at different levels without having to redefine everything each time. It would save so much time and make my setup more scalable. I’m curious if others have encountered this issue and if there’s a workaround or a feature request in the works.
Overall, I’m really enjoying the journey of creating a more connected and automated home. It’s been a great way to learn new skills and problem-solve. I’d love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might have for someone still in the learning phase. Let’s keep the conversation going!
