Smart Home Automation Setup and Troubleshooting

Hey everyone! I’m currently in the process of upgrading my home automation system and thought I’d share my journey and some questions I have along the way.

I’ve been using Home Assistant for a while now, but I’m looking to integrate more devices and streamline my setup. One thing I’ve been curious about is the best way to handle MQTT discovery for devices that come and go. I’ve read that sending an empty config message can remove devices, but I’m not sure how to handle orphaned entities if my service crashes. Has anyone found a reliable solution for this?

Another area I’m exploring is home security. I recently purchased a Govee smart space heater, and I’m trying to figure out how to integrate it with my existing system. I’ve heard great things about their devices, but I’m not entirely sure how to set it up for optimal performance. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated!

On the topic of lighting, I’ve been using ESP8266 modules for DIY LED lamps and have been really impressed with their reliability. I’ve also come across the Onion Omega2+, which seems like a great IoT solution for its price. I’m considering using it for some projects around the house, but I’d love to hear if anyone else has experience with it.

One challenge I’ve encountered is with my media player. It seems to hang occasionally, and I’m not sure how to troubleshoot it effectively. I’ve rebooted my HA server and checked the logs, but the issue persists. Does anyone have any suggestions for resolving this?

Lastly, I’m really interested in integrating presence detection for my pets. I’ve seen some creative solutions for human presence, but I’d love to extend this to my dog and cat. Has anyone managed to set something like this up?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and any advice you might have. Happy automating! :rocket:
