I’ve been on a journey to automate my bedroom, and I’m thrilled to share my success! 
My Goal
I wanted to create a seamless experience where my bedroom adapts to my presence and preferences automatically. The main features I aimed for were:
- Auto Closing Blinds: When I leave the room, the blinds should close to save energy.
- Adjustable Lighting: The brightness should dim gradually as I wind down for bed.
- Temperature Control: Maintain a comfortable temperature based on the time of day.
The Setup
I’ve got a mix of devices from different brands, and integrating them was a challenge but also super rewarding. Here’s what I used:
- Smart Blinds: Controlled via Zigbee
- Smart Bulbs: Philips Hue for adjustable lighting
- Smart Thermostat: Tado for temperature management
- Presence Sensor: To detect when I’m in or out
The Process
- Research: I spent hours reading forums and watching tutorials to understand how each device communicates and how to set up the automations.
- Trial and Error: My first attempts were basic, like turning lights on/off. But I quickly realized the power of combining multiple devices for a more seamless experience.
- Final Setup: After tweaking the timings and settings, everything started working together beautifully!
My Favorite Feature
The auto closing blinds have been a game-changer. I no longer have to remember to close them when I leave. It’s such a small thing, but it makes a big difference in energy savings and convenience.
Tips for Others
- Start Small: Don’t overwhelm yourself. Begin with one room or one function and expand from there.
- Use Scenes: Group actions together to simplify control. For example, a “Goodnight” scene that closes blinds, dims lights, and adjusts the thermostat.
- Experiment: Don’t be afraid to tweak settings. What works for someone else might not work for you, so find your perfect setup!
Looking Ahead
Now that my bedroom is set up, I’m excited to tackle the rest of my home. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to see how much more I can automate!
