I’ve been on a journey to automate my home for the past few months, and I must say, it’s been an incredible experience! 
From setting up smart curtains to automating my lighting system, every little victory has been worth the effort. Let me share some of my experiences and tips with you all!
Smart Curtains: A Game Changer
One of the first things I wanted to automate was my curtains. I set up a rule where the curtains open at sunrise and close at sunset, but I also wanted to add some flexibility. I have a few switches that can override this behavior—like a film switch that keeps the curtains closed when I’m watching a movie, or a coolback switch that closes the back curtains when it’s too hot. Initially, I struggled with getting the timing right, but after some trial and error, everything works seamlessly now! 
Humidity Automation: Keeping My Basement Dry
I’ve also set up an automation to control my dehumidifier based on the humidity levels in my basement. I use an input_number to set the trigger humidity and a sensor group to get the average humidity. The automation turns on the dehumidifier when the humidity rises above the set level for a minute and turns it off when it drops below. It’s been working perfectly, and I no longer have to worry about humidity issues! 
Tips for Setting Up Automations
- Start Small: Don’t try to automate everything at once. Start with one room or one function and gradually expand.
- Use Triggers and Conditions: Experiment with different triggers and conditions to make your automations more precise.
- Keep Logs: Always check the logs if something isn’t working as expected. It helps in troubleshooting and refining your automations.
Challenges and Learning
Of course, there were some bumps along the way. For instance, I faced issues with the SmartThings outlet not powering on as expected, and I had to dig into the settings to figure out what was wrong. But every challenge was an opportunity to learn something new!
