Hello everyone, I wanted to share my recent success story with integrating my smart home devices. I’ve been working on automating my blinds and lights for a while now, and I’m thrilled to say it’s finally working perfectly!
The Setup
I have a mix of IKEA Fyrtur blinds and Philips Hue lights. My goal was to create a seamless experience where the blinds adjust automatically based on natural light, and the lights dim to match. I also wanted to ensure everything works smoothly with my Google Home integration.
The Challenges
Initially, I struggled with getting the blinds to show dynamic icons in the Home Assistant UI. After some research and tweaking, I found that changing the entity’s “Show as” setting to “Blind” did the trick. It was such a small change, but it made a huge difference in the user experience!
For the lights, I wanted them to dim when the blinds were partially closed. This required some custom automation rules. I used the Philips Hue API to adjust the brightness based on the blind’s position. It took a few tries, but I finally got it right!
The Results
Now, every morning, my blinds open gradually as the sun rises, and my lights dim to let in the natural light. In the evening, the process reverses, and everything dims beautifully for a cozy atmosphere. It’s like having a personal assistant for my home!
Tips for Others
- Start Small: Don’t try to automate everything at once. Focus on one room or one function and perfect it before moving on.
- Custom Automations: Don’t be afraid to dive into the settings and create your own rules. It’s a bit intimidating at first, but the community resources are amazing.
- Test and Adjust: Every home is different, so what works for someone else might need tweaking for you. Be patient and keep experimenting.
I’m so happy with how everything turned out. It’s been a great learning experience, and I can’t wait to tackle my next smart home project! If anyone has questions or needs help with similar setups, feel free to reach out. Happy automating! ![]()
