Christmas Lights Automation Success Story
This year, I decided to take my Christmas decorations to the next level with smart home automation! 
After months of planning and setup, I’m thrilled to share my journey and the results. Here’s how I turned my home into a festive wonderland using Govee RGB lights and Shelly switches.
The Vision
I wanted to create a magical outdoor lighting display that could be controlled with my voice, set to timers, and even synced with music. The goal was to minimize manual adjustments and enjoy the festive ambiance without the hassle.
The Setup
- Govee RGB Strip Lights: I installed these around my patio, along the roofline, and under the eaves. They were perfect for creating vibrant, dynamic displays.
- Shelly 2.5 Switches: These were essential for controlling outdoor lights and decorations without rewiring anything. They also allowed me to integrate everything into my smart home ecosystem.
- Google Home for Voice Control: I programmed custom routines to turn the lights on/off, change colors, and even sync them to music.
The Challenges
- Weather Resistance: Ensuring all devices were waterproof was crucial. The Govee lights were surprisingly durable, but I had to be careful with the Shelly switches.
- Synchronization: Getting the lights to sync perfectly with music was a fun challenge. I used a combination of timers and voice commands to achieve the desired effect.
The Results
- Voice-Controlled Festive ambiance: I can now say, “Hey Google, turn on the Christmas lights!” and watch them illuminate instantly.
- Dynamic Color Changes: Using pre-programmed scenes, the lights transition through festive colors seamlessly.

Final Thoughts
This project has been a fantastic way to explore the possibilities of smart home automation while creating a festive atmosphere I can enjoy year-round. The combination of Govee’s vibrant lights and Shelly’s reliable switches made it all possible. I’m already brainstorming ideas for next year’s upgrades!
