I recently set up a smart home routine that I thought would be straightforward, but it turned out to be a fun challenge! I have a smart switch connected to a commercial coffee machine, allowing me to control it via Alexa. The machine takes about 25 minutes to heat up, so I wanted Alexa to make an announcement once it’s ready.
Here’s the setup: I use the switch’s native app to toggle the machine on before I get home. I also tried using Alexa to turn it on. The goal was to have Alexa announce, ‘The coffee machine’s ready’ 25 minutes after the machine starts.
I looked into creating a routine in Alexa, but the trigger options didn’t seem to allow for a delayed announcement. I thought, ‘How hard can this be?’ Turns out, it was a bit tricky, but I figured it out! I used a combination of the smart switch and Alexa routines with a third-party app to set a timer. Now, it works perfectly!
This experience made me realize how creative you can get with smart home automation. It’s all about thinking outside the box and combining different tools to achieve your goal. I’m now inspired to tackle more projects, like automating my lights and maybe even my garden!
