Smart Home Automation Success Story: Integrating Lighting and Motion Sensors

I’ve been on an exciting journey setting up my smart home, and I want to share some of my experiences and tips with you all. :rocket:

Starting with lighting automation, I’ve been using Philips Hue bulbs and Eaton Aspire 5 scene controllers. The setup has been a breeze, and the ability to customize button labels has been a game-changer for me. I love how I can assign specific scenes to each button, making it intuitive for everyone in the house to use. For example, in my bedroom, one button controls the can lights, another handles the wall sconces, and the third turns everything on or off. It’s all managed through a single gang box, which keeps things neat and organized. :+1:

One challenge I faced was controlling the fan in my bedroom. I initially thought I’d need a separate switch, but after some research, I found a clever workaround by using a two-gang box—one for the multi-button lights and another for the fan. It’s a simple solution that keeps everything button-operated and within reach. :hammer_and_wrench:

I also wanted to automate the lights based on motion. Using Hubitat Rule Machine, I set up a rule where the lights dim to 10% between sunset and sunrise. When the motion sensor detects movement, they brighten to 80%. Initially, I had some issues with the lights not turning off at sunrise, but after tweaking the rule, everything works perfectly now. It’s amazing how these small adjustments can make such a big difference! :bulb:

For those of you looking to integrate multiple devices, I highly recommend exploring Node-RED for more advanced automation. It’s a powerful tool that allows you to create custom flows, such as monitoring devices that haven’t checked in within a certain timeframe. I’ve been using it to keep an eye on my Xiaomi motion sensors, and it’s been incredibly helpful. :male_detective::male_sign:

Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone in this community for their invaluable insights and support. It’s wonderful to be part of such a helpful and innovative group. If you have any questions or tips about smart home automation, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to share what I’ve learned! :hugs:

Happy automating, everyone! :star2:
