I’ve been on a journey to create a seamless smart home ecosystem, and I’m thrilled to share my recent success in integrating my Nuki smart lock with my Hive heating system. This integration has completely transformed how I manage my home, and I’d love to walk you through the process and benefits!
The Challenge
Initially, I wanted to use my smartphone to control both my front door and heating system. However, I faced a few hurdles:
- Nuki Integration: I wasn’t sure how to connect my Nuki lock with my existing smart home setup, especially since I use a URMET intercom system.
- Hive Heating Automation: While I could manually adjust my heating via the Hive app, I wanted a more hands-off approach—specifically, the ability to boost the heating for a set duration with just a tap.
The Solution
After some research and experimentation, I found the perfect combination of tools and scripts to make this happen:
1. Nuki Lock Integration
I discovered that the Nuki app offers robust API support, allowing me to create custom automation rules. By setting up a Webhook in the Nuki app, I was able to trigger actions in my smart home system whenever the lock was engaged or disengaged. This means I can now:
- Automatically unlock my door when I’m within a certain proximity (using geolocation).
- Receive real-time notifications whenever the lock is opened or closed.
2. Hive Heating Automation
For the heating system, I utilized Home Assistant to create a custom automation. Here’s how it works:
- I set up a Hive Boost Script that increases the heating temperature for a specific duration (e.g., 15 minutes).
- I linked this script to a custom climate card in my dashboard, allowing me to trigger the boost with a single tap.
- The best part? I can now customise the duration of the heating boost directly from the card—no more fixed settings!
The Outcome
This integration has been a game-changer for my daily routine:
- Convenience: I no longer need to juggle multiple apps to control my home. Everything is accessible from a single dashboard.
- Energy Efficiency: The timed heating boosts ensure I’m not wasting energy on unnecessary heating.
- Security: The Nuki lock integration gives me peace of mind, knowing I can monitor and control my front door from anywhere.
Tips for Others
If you’re looking to integrate multiple smart home devices, here are a few tips:
- Start Small: Begin with one device or system and gradually expand your setup.
- Leverage APIs and Scripts: Don’t be afraid to dive into the developer side of things. Tools like Home Assistant and IFTTT are incredibly powerful.
- Customise Your Dashboard: Create a dashboard that reflects your daily routines and priorities. This will make managing your smart home much more intuitive.
Final Thoughts
This project has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’m excited to see how I can further enhance my smart home setup in the future. If you’re working on a similar project or have questions about my setup, I’d love to hear from you!
