Smart Home Automation Success Story: Motion-Activated LED Strip

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent success with setting up a motion-activated LED strip in my shower. It’s been a fun project and I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips for improvement!

My goal was to create a system where the LED strip turns on when the water is turned on and changes color based on how long the shower has been running. After some research and trial and error, I finally got it working smoothly!

Here’s what I did:

  1. Sensor Selection: I went with a water flow sensor to detect when the water is turned on. It’s connected to my smart hub and acts as the trigger for the automation.

  2. LED Strip Setup: I chose a battery-powered LED strip with color changing capabilities. It’s wirelessly controlled, which made installation much easier.

  3. Automation Rules: I set up a rule in my smart home app where:

    • The LED strip turns yellow after 5 minutes.
    • It switches to orange after 10 minutes.
    • And finally turns red after 15 minutes.

This visual cue helps me keep track of how long I’ve been in the shower, encouraging me to conserve water without constantly checking the clock.

Challenges Faced:

  • Finding the right sensor that could reliably detect water flow without causing false triggers.
  • Ensuring the LED strip’s battery life was sufficient for daily use.

Tips for Others:

  • If you’re planning a similar project, I’d recommend testing the sensor in different flow conditions to ensure accuracy.
  • Look for LED strips with strong battery performance or consider installing them near a power source if possible.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has implemented a similar system or has suggestions for improving mine. It’s been a great way to add a bit of fun and functionality to my daily routine!

Cheers,
