I’ve been on a journey to fully automate my home using SmartThings, and I wanted to share my experiences in case it helps others who might be facing similar challenges.
The Challenge:
One of my biggest hurdles was setting up a reliable system to track my children’s whereabouts. I created a flow that uses Google Chromecast to display their GPS coordinates on specific Google Home devices. While the basic functionality worked, I struggled with getting the results to display only on the initiating device. After some research and trial and error, I figured out how to modify the flow to achieve this. It was a great feeling to finally get it working as intended!
A Happy Surprise:
Another unexpected success was integrating my Shelly devices into my pool setup. Initially, I was concerned about reliability, but after some careful configuration, they’ve been working flawlessly. The ability to control my pool pump remotely has been a huge convenience.
Lessons Learned:
- Documentation is Key: I learned the importance of keeping detailed notes on my configurations. It’s saved me hours of troubleshooting.
- Community Support: Don’t underestimate the value of forums and community support. I’ve found some incredible solutions and tips from other users.
- Patience Pays Off: Automation can be complex, but taking the time to thoroughly test each component before moving on to the next step has been invaluable.
Looking Ahead:
I’m now focusing on optimizing my energy usage with solar panels and smart meters. It’s been fascinating to see how much I can reduce my energy consumption with the right setup.
If anyone has tips or success stories they’d like to share, I’d love to hear them! Let’s keep learning and improving together. ![]()
